202

I was driving west on 202
the same way that I'd leave you
been a half a lifetime since I did,
I still feel like a kid
when I see these familiar trees
all at once I am seventeen
I'm trying to make sense of this feeling
who I am, how much of this is real and
I'm crying, is this my way of dealing
with feeling glad?
I remember just making the light
and bearing to the right
baring myself to write this in
I guess because of where I've been
there is a word for you inscribed in me
somewhere indelibly
I'm trying to make sense of this feeling
who I am, how much of this is real and
I'm crying, is this my way of dealing
with feeling glad?

The Letter
03:12
|
|

hey, there's a letter for you
downstairs, can I read it too
hey, there's a letter for you
downstairs on the table
any other day
so you never could find her
in the morning you'd be gone
she came in from out of town
what more could a country boy want
hey, there's a letter for you
downstairs, can I read it too
hey, there's a letter for you
downstairs on the table
played it cool so long
that you couldn't remember
how a broken heart could feel
she came in from out of town
he tore out just to find her again
hey, there's a letter for you
downstairs, can I read it too
hey, there's a letter for you
downstairs on the table
wasn't hard to mount
it is hard with a letter
but now his life is hers
she came in from out of town
what more could a country boy want
hey, there's a letter for you
downstairs, can I read it too
hey, there's a letter for you
downstairs on the table

With Birds
02:23
|
|
||
if you had told me I'd be where I am
I would have thought you were lying
even if I had believed things could change
how would I go about trying?
I don't know anything at all
except for those words
I thought I'd seen this whole sky before
until I saw it with birds
reached for my phone for the ten thousandth time
thinking that I'd photograph this
I take the same photo again and again
as if I needed the practice
I don't know anything at all
except for those words
I thought I'd seen this whole sky before
until I saw it with birds
and then there's all that 'til death do us part'
turns out that's also some bullshit
really there's just a few forms to fill out
then get a court clerk to sign it
I don't know anything at all
except for those words
I thought I'd seen this whole sky before
until I saw it with birds

Tag Along
03:20
|
|
||
standing outside your door
and everything I see's a metaphor
the kind of shit I need to get away from
if I could take my brain on a vacation
I like it here inside my mind
except for like a quarter of the time
when trying just to figure something out
does little to alleviate the doubt
and I know that if I wanted to
I could convince myself that this was true
until I finally figure out I'm wrong
my mind would merely tag along
I reserve the right to be confused
and I reserve the right to self-abuse
a pep talk couldn't do a thing
as long as I stay tethered to this string
and when the thing you're trying not to think of
becomes the only thing that you can think of
need someone to lobotomize my cortex
before I spiral deeper in the vortex
and I know that if I wanted to
I could convince myself that this was true
until I finally figure out I'm wrong
my mind would merely tag along
it seems it should be simple as a kiss
nothing so small should be complex as this
yet here I am and everything feels drastic
I'm winning medals in mental gymnastics
and when the thing you're trying not to think of
becomes the only thing that you can think of
it's getting pretty difficult to doubt it
and daunting even not to think about it
but I know that if I wanted to
I could believe the opposite was true
if I could just convince my mind I'm wrong
my heart would surely tag along

Newer Same
02:14
|
|
||
you stand there
by the doorway
your hand by your hip
with a cigarette
six months
before I met you
I was not doing ok
I was stumbling
the right place
at the right time
for a little while
for a bit too long
sometimes
I forget things
like the note that you hid
beneath the scrabble board
you stand there
by the doorway
your hand by your hip
with a cigarette
I just
found that photo
are things different these days
or just a newer same?
I just
found that photo
are we different these days
or just a newer same?
